7-Zip is a program for creating or unpacking archived and compressed files. It can unpack 7zip, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB files, or create file archives in those formats. For the standard ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2 - 10 % better than that provided by PKZip or WinZip, and the native 7zip format can provide a 45% reduction in file size from the common zip format. The program is highly configurable, allowing the user to balance the level of compression and speed. The interface is designed to mimic the standard Windows shell, Explorer, and is localized to 40 languages.

ZipGenius is the file compression suite you were searching for: it is free and easy to use, plus it supports more than 20 formats of compressed archives, including ISO, NRG, RAR, ARJ, ACE, CAB, SQX, OpenOffice.org documents and the excellent 7-zip. ZipGenius now can precompress executable files going to be added to a ZIP archive through the UPX compressor. The program also comes with a built in FTP client that allows to download and upload files from within the software. ZipGenius is presented in two editions: STANDARD and SUITE that differs for the content they ship to user's Desktop. While the suite edition is the full setup package that includes all the optional modules of the ZipGenius project, because it is a setup layout oriented to experts and power users, the standard setup package just includes the main ZipGenius application because it is designed for most Windows users, that just want to open/compress/decompress archives in several formats.

StubbieMan is a program which makes self-extracting archive files (SFX files). A SFX allows you to distribute zip files without the recipient needing to use an unzipping program - they just run your SFX. An SFX also gives you more control over how and to where the files in the archive are extracted. Here are the things which StubbieMan SFX can do which most of the others cannot: No need to create a zip file first - StubbieMan automatically compresses the files you select as it makes the SFX. Display a customised message to the user before any files are extracted. Optionally prompt the user for a folder to unpack the archived files into. Specify a default folder to unpack the archived files into. Use constants for the unpack folder such as the user's TEMP folder, the user's Windows/WinNT folder or the user's Windows System folder. Run any number of commands either before or after (or both!) the files in the archive have been extracted. Get the SFX program to launch these commands one at a time or concurrently. Show a customised success message at the end of the process. Optionally clean up all files and folders created by the SFX. For example, to distribute an AVI movie file in an SFX you get the SFX to unzip it, launch a process to display it to the user (using the option which forces the SFX to wait till the process displaying the AVI has finished) and then have the SFX automatically delete the unzipped AVI file as the final step in the SFX program's execution. The 'stub' program used by StubbieMan is just 48K .

QuickZip is a freeware file archiver, which handles .zip files. Unlike the conventional file archivers, it does not have any installer program that copies files to your system directory, or modifies the registry. QuickZip comes in a simple, self-extracting package that extracts files to the folder _you_ specify, and does not go beyond that.
